Identify, Disposition, and Route Parts for Rework

Reduce scrap and save time on reworked parts.

  • Are you scrapping parts that should be reworked?
  • Are you unsure of the reasons parts need rework?
  • Are employees spending too much time manually tagging parts or walking them across the floor to previous operations?
  • Do you lack a good system for sending parts suspected of needing rework to the appropriate person for inspection?
  • Can you see the benefit to a system that identifies parts for rework, records the rework reason, and creates an electronic rework order and routing on the spot?

The ShopVue Paperless Dispatch module includes two features to address these needs and more:

  • Rework
  • Material Review Board (MRB)

Reworking tracking can be as simple or as nuanced as you need it to be.

Simple Rework (No New Routing)

At any time, an Operator can scan parts that need rework and touch a button to indicate he is beginning rework and ShopVue will charge the time accordingly.

Simple Rework (With Routing)

Imagine an Operator is working on an assembly order of 50 parts. He notices five of the plastic molds have extra material that should have been removed at a previous trimming operation.

ShopVue Report Suspect tool. The Operator simply hits the Rework button on the Console, selects the quantity to be reworked, and chooses from a dropdown list of rework reasons.

ShopVue creates a new rework order for the five parts and displays this order on the Operator's touchscreen under the trimming operation's WorkCenter tab. The Operator assigned to trimming sees the order on his or her Activity List and knows to trim the five parts and return them to the assembly operation.

Now, let’s imagine a slightly more complicated scenario.

Material Review Board (MRB)

During the assembly operation, the Operator notices anomalies in the wiring on two parts. He is not trained to know whether these parts should be scrapped, if they can be reworked and, if so, to which step they must return.

The Operator will use the ShopVue MRB feature to notify an Inspector of the suspect parts.

ShopVue MRB tag.The Operator touches Report Suspect on the ShopVue Console. He identifies the parts and chooses the reason he’s marking them suspect.

ShopVue then creates an MRB tag (shown at right) that can be automatically printed and affixed to the suspect parts. Simultaneously, ShopVue records the MRB tag in the system.

If desired, ShopVue can notify the responsible Inspector by email or text message.

When the Inspector opens the MRB Dispositioning screen, he sees a list of active MRB tags. As he inspects the parts, he tells ShopVue whether the parts are scrap or can be reworked and chooses the appropriate rework routing.

MRB Dispositioning Menu. The MRB screen shows a list of complete (grey) and active (white) MRB tags with a configurable detail menu on the right.

Advanced Rework Orders

In the simple rework example given above, the type of rework merely required a one-step rework routing. The parts moved from assembly back to trimming and then rejoined the original routing at assembly.

In some cases, rework orders are not this simple.

ShopVue enables Inspectors to select reroute routings from existing templates or create a custom routing by indicating which operations on the route need to be redone or inserting new ones. The Inspector can select the Caused At Step and Rejoin Step and identify the necessary steps in between.

ShopVue can then save custom rework routings as new templates, saving Inspectors the need to identify the routing each time parts need to be reworked because of a similar issue.

Benefits to ShopVue Rework and MRB

ShopVue Rework and MRB can:

  • Reduce the cost and time to process rework.
  • Ship complete orders sooner.
  • Improve the process by knowing rework rates and causes.
  • Capture actual labor cost of rework.
  • Get real-time visibility of which parts need to be reviewed, which are designated for rework, and where parts are in the rework process.
